The Importance of Parent Involvement In Band

There is very little more important to the success of an individual than the support of those around him or her. You see it in sports all the time. How often do you see a famous athlete thank his family in the post game interview? All the time! As human beings we are meant to support each other and to be supported by others. We all need positive feedback to encourage us to keep learning, to keep growing, and to continue to strive to succeed. That’s why parent involvement in band and other a music programs is CRITICAL to the success of the student.

The Instrument and The Child

Picking up an instrument and playing it is not an easy task. When you get a moment take a look at a flute and think of all the amazing engineering that went into creating this mechanical musical device. Look at the measurement of the holes necessary to achieve the correct pitches. Examine the structure of the rods connecting the posts that hold that pad cups. Then think of the pads themselves and how even the slightest leak would make it so much harder for that instrument to sound the correct note. If any small element is amiss it could wreak havoc on an instrumentalist starting out for the first time. We’ll talk more on the importance of selecting a quality instrument (and making sure it’s functional) later, but just imagine how much has to go right in order for a beautiful sound to emerge from that piece of engineering.

The Parent’s Role

Children are even more complicated than the instruments! A teacher can show the student how to do the rhythms, how to use the instrument properly, how to clean the instrument, how to play in time with other instrumentalists or singers, but there is a lot of learning above and beyond that! There is a psychological element to it that has to be nurtured constantly and consistently. That is the Parent’s Role. With everything that could go wrong while playing music the mind of the student is the most important factor. It needs to be encouraged and supported so that when things do go wrong, and they will, the student is equipped with determination and fortitude to overcome the adversity.

As parents we need to be extremely supportive of the children while they begin the process of learning an instrument. It isn’t easy to pick up the instrument and just play, it takes practice and dedication to the art. Your role as a parent of a band student is simple, just encourage them! There are going to be a lot of wrong notes and rhythms that happen before you actually recognize what they are trying to play. There are going to be times when you will be tempted to go out to the car in the garage to get away from the sounds they are making. That’s OK! Just encourage them to continue to practice and to learn. What they learn now becomes the foundation for everything later.

Building Character

As a parent you don’t have to know a thing about music to help them excel. Simply be there. Encourage your child to continue to practice and help them through the rough moments. Through band you can create a foundation to build character, discipline, determination, and drive that will carry over into every other aspect of their lives!
